Ecce Domus Dei et Porta Coeli

2022, Sculpture

The work takes as its starting point the unsuccessful restoration of the Ecce Homo fresco, carried out by Cecilia Giménez in the city of Borja, Spain, which distorted the image of Jesus and became a viral story on the internet in 2012.

This work aims to discuss the deconstruction of the figurative representation of the divine and create a new form of representation for it, so that spirituality and humanity may come closer together.

Made a priori from a ready-made, it makes mention of the title Ecce Domus Dei et Porta Cœli, which means "Behold the House of God and the Gate of Heaven".

The theme permeates the artist's work, who spent her childhood in a convent in Belgium, where religious experience was strongly associated with punishment, martyrdom, and rigidity. However, in her work, Maussen seeks to portray "God" as a "house," whose surroundings are tender and "soft," while the interior is a mystery.
