Menopause

2025 - Mixed technique, Embroidery and Drawing

The Menopause series addresses transitional states experienced by women, inspired by experiences related to menopause, chronic pain, and reconnection with bodily and intuitive feminine wisdom. In this context, pain is not only physical, but also the emotional discomfort that arises from the absence of boundaries—situations that accumulate throughout life due to the desire to avoid conflict and silences.

Gabrielle Maussen develops Menopause as the central element of her research, starting from the intention of giving form to this changing body and connecting it to historical echoes about female aging: women silenced, persecuted, or, in other cultures, recognized as guardians of knowledge. In different eras, menopause was taboo, associated with infertility or the loss of youth; in contrast, indigenous traditions and ancestral memories point to this moment as a strengthening and passage to a position of authority.

Composed of scraps in different shades of red, dyed with fresh flowers gathered from nature, and raw cotton ropes arranged in an organic and expansive form, the work is structured around the figure of the porcupine, enlarged and laden with symbolism. Between the sharpness of pain and the need for protection and retreat, the animal emerges as a metaphor for the extreme sensitivity of those undergoing profound transformations, often without space for recognition or understanding.
